RBK 50 Cent analysis. (Halsey)

This is a print advert of 50 Cent advertising Reebok. The size of the image takes 50% of the print. This could suggest that the image of the advertiser is as important as the text. Additionally, there is a piece of text which is the largest piece of text on the advert. 'I am what I am' could support the image of 50 Cent. This is suggested because 50 Cent is wearing a camouflaged hat which shows he is dominant as it connotes the army and being a soldier. 50 Cent is comfortable with his past and present and what he has become considering he has been apart of gangs and been shot over 10 times. This then leads to his speech: "take advantage of today because tomorrow is not promised." it suggests he is relating to his own life experience. This could be to influence young people/teenagers to be grateful for what you have today.
Swiftly moving on, 50 Cent's pose and the type of shot (medium close-up) implies he is quite a dominant male. He seems quite serious and doesn't take life for a joke.
Additionally, the lighting of 50 Cent highlights his facial expressions alongside some of his body which suggests that these are the main points of the image. His facial expression also implies that he is quite authoritative. Dominant reading (Stuart Hall) suggests that the producer intends to portray Reebok as being a brand suitable for hoodlums especially because 50 Cent is affiliated with gangs and violence (reinforcing the finger prints on the background appose to the image of the celebrity himself). However, the oppositional reading (Stuart Hall) could be interpreted as persuading teenagers or under-achieving people to buy their products and using 50 Cent as the cover would appeal to the audience more as he is very successful in his career. So the producer may not be using 50 Cent to promote the violence of the celebrity but to advertise that a successful rapper who many young teenagers look up to and have grown up listening to is interested in a brand which has fell off in their marketing.
