Media Magazine. (Halsey)

1) What is the article about? Summarise the article in 50 words.
The article is about the female gaze which challenges models who are under the size 6. It focuses on the idea of plus size women. The article suggests that the media is promoting the idea of women being a small size and having a "perfect" face which isn't the case.

2) What is the name of the film that has sparked this recent debate on body image and female representation?

"A Perfect 14"

3) How does the 'Female Gaze' in this article differ from the 'Male Gaze' of Laura Mulvey's theory?

The dominant view in the media is masculine and created for the benefit of men  and that women are presented for men to look at, according to Laura Mulvey. However, the female gaze is  the opposite of this and has been recently suggested, The 'Male Gaze' differs from the article as it explains that women of a plus size can equally be attractive as women that are under size 6.

4) What is your own opinion of the representation of women in advertising? Should the media carry more representation of 'real' women? Why does the media not currently feature size 14 women if that is the average size of a British woman?

In my opinion, women shouldn't play a big part in the media. This is because women are being presented as seductive characters. For example, in adverts (such as perfumes or male clothing) women are seen posing and giving a sexual impression towards males. If women are to be apart of the media, they should be shown as who they genuinely are with their everyday characteristics, not what people want them to be. Additionally, the idea of women of size 14 not being seen in the media may be because males alongside women prefer seeing those who are size 6 as they assume it is the 'perfect' body size. Especially as it is a big thing in the media of seeing women as a size 6 being used in adverts/promotion, those who are size 14 have grown to believe they are not useful and do not meet the expectation.

5) Go to the website of A Perfect 14. Watch the trailer and read about the film. Write your own summary of the film and what it is trying to achieve.

The trailer uses women of plus size which is a realistic view of women. It isn't living up to society's expectations of women, however it is giving the real view of them and shows that you don't need to be ashamed of your size, there is beauty in everything.
